Your Questions About Tub Fixtures

Nancy asks…
Why do I have very little water coming out of my laundry tub faucet?
Throughout my house I have plenty of water and pressure out of my faucets and fixtures. But my laundry tub faucet has very little it started a bout a week ago and has gotten worse. I show no evidence of a leak the water meter is not moving with all faucets off. If it were a leak the little dial would be turning. Any plumbers out there that maybe could help? And yes the supply valves are on.

admin answers:
Faucets on laundry tubs tend to be a little on the cheap side. That combined with their usual location in the house they tend to accumulate the various types of calcium or silicate that your local water company or city water system puts into the water as it leaves the treatment plant. They add this stuff to keep the water from becoming acidic as it goes through the pipes. What has happened in your place is that some of this material has settled out of the water and solidified in the stem valve in you faucet or possibly in the screen where the water comes out of the faucet. The simple thing to do to find out is to remove the screen at the outlet of the faucet. Just take a pair of pliers and grab on to the screen and unscrew it. You will probably see all kinds of krud in the screen, just clean it off and put it back on. If that does not solve your problem you need to take the valve stems apart and clean them.

Refitting tub fixture?
We have a bathroom that has a tub only no shower head. I purchased a replacement set that is almost identical to what I have except it has a shower head in the kit. How do I install the plumbing required.

admin answers:
Go to home depot or Lowe’s and get one of the “how to” books that they have on plumbing. It will walk you through the steps that you need to take. These types of books run about $15-$40 and are invaluable for those who are just starting out “being handy”.

Chris asks…
Re bathroom remodel Which is cheaper.Reglaze the tub or rip it out put in new tub and ceramic surround.?
We can do the demo and put in the tub and fixtures but we have to hire someone to do the ceramic tile surround. We would not buy a real expensive tile.We would hire someone to do the re glaze. What do you think. We will be in this home for many many years. The tub is in good shape however it is an ugly beige and the surround is attached and an ugly beige as well. Thanks in advance

Re-glazing works great and lasts if its done right. If you do it by hand and brush it on be careful when trying to second coat as it will run and look bad.The best way is to have it sprayed on by a pro.Good luck
