Your Questions About Tub Fixtures Cleaning

George asks…
How to or what do you use to clean off the white calcium build-up on bathtub jacuzzi sprayer valves?
My daughter is renting a house.
The bathtub jacuzzi has hard calcium deposits around the valves that the water comes out of.
The tub fixtures, including these valves, are antique brass color.
There is also a turquoise coloration near these calcium deposits, probably due to copper.
Once I can get this removed, would I be able to tape them off and spray paint over them? If so, what type of paint, so that it doesn’t peel off, such as when she cleans with comet?
I’ve already sprayed lime-away on them, but that doesn’t seem to do much.

First of all you are correct about the turquoise color deposits. These are from the minerals in the water taking some copper from the pipes as it flows through.
There are many expensive products on the market to remove these deposits such as lime-away, clr, and others. I have tried all of them over the years. Buy a jug of white vinegar at the grocery store! It’s a fraction the price and works as well or better than any of those cleaners that cost many times the price.
There should be a way to unscrew the nozzles so you can remove them from the tub. Put them in a bucket with about a half cup of vinegar and 2-3 gallons of water. Let them soak in there over night. Depending on how thick the deposits are you might want to take an old tooth brush to them. If some of the deposits remain let them soak a couple more hours and brush again. Then rinse completely with lots of cold water.
With the nozzles removed it is the perfect time to do the painting. At home centers (I recomend Menards if there is one near you) in the paint department you can find bathtub refinishing kits. These have a special epoxy paint just for this purpose. Applied according to the instructions it will give a very durable finish. Vital point to the application is to make certain the surface you are painting is absolutely clean! Use a good degreasing cleaner (I like ‘Simply Orange’) then clean it again with the vinegar to make certain there is no residue of any type. Then rinse everything very thoughly. Put a fan in there for several hours to make certain everything is completely dry. Now you are ready to paint it. Anyone can slap paint on anything. The key to a premium paint job is taking the time to good preparation work! If you want a truely excellent paint job expect to spend as much time doing prep work as you do painting.

Jenny asks…
My lease is about up and I have some questions, about how things work?
Alright so next month my lease is up. My lease has my name and my roommate (I’m going to call her A) is up next month. She wants to move out June 13th, but says she isn’t going to give the landlord the 30 days notice required by the lease because I am wanting to resign the lease with my boyfriend. Is she allowed to not give notice? Next, how do I deal with her portion of the security deposit? Some people have told me I need to give A her security deposit, and other people say when I move out the landlord will give A her security deposit. Also, my lease strictly says that without 30 days notice, the landlord can return the security deposite at her discretion. But, I’m not sure how everything works and how it will affect each of us. Next, move out clean up and replacement. There are several light fixtures that the bulbs are burnt out in the house, my lease says I will be charged for lights being burnt out. So is it both our responsibilities to replace them. Ie. should I ask her to help me replace the lights before she leaves? This has been a bit of controversy between me and my boyfriend because he says A will just say I’m staying here why should she buy lights for me? But, when I move out I’m going to have to replace all of the bulbs in the house, and I don’t think that’s fair when so many of the bulbs burnt out in the last year. Next, what is meant in move out cleaning? My mom says when you move out of an apartment you should clean the bathroom like shower/tub, toilet, and counter, to as clean as you can, clean out the stove and the countertop and sink, and vacuum/mop the floors in the house, and make sure there are not any “dirty” spots on the walls. And my boyfriend says that I’m trying to be too clean, and that I can’t justify to A that she needs to do any of this, because I am staying. But, I still think she should do some cleaning other than her room when she moves out. Also, our bathroom walls have marks on them from the steam from showing where the steam water ran down the wall (wall like dry wall, not wall like shower wall) and then dust stuck to it. So, I wondering if that needs to be cleaned? Actually, the house is very dusty. I don’t like how dusty it is, and in some places it looks like caked on dust. In other places we just have these huge floating dust clusters. Also, the fridge looks like it needs cleaned. I cleaned it at X-mas, but now it has stuff caked in it and like some liquid stuff leaked at some spots. To some degree it’s like the house needs a good spring cleaning. But, is responsible for any of the cleaning before she leaves? Tips and suggestions would help a lot!
But is my old roommate responsible for the same move out cleaning, as she would be if we both moved out?

admin answers:
YOU need to notify the landlord NOW in Writing that you will be renewing the lease with a new room mate.
Your landlord refunds the security deposit if there is no damage to your current room mate and your new room mate (BF) gives the landlord his share of the security deposit. Your bf needs to fill out an application, pay the fee and undergo the background check. Fail to inform the landlord of the change in roommates, you all end up evicted

Richard asks…

We have live in this house for about 3.5 years and landlord is making us pay for professionally cleaned carpets there is no stains in carpet isn’t this part of normal wear and tear?
do we have to pay for that?
this is what he wants us to do before we move out

clean kitchen cabinets
clean all appliances
clean windows windowsills and track
mini blinds
bathroom tub, shower doors and track toilet sink mirror and cabinet
clean all light fixtures and replace any burnt out bulbs
clean all floors
sweep porch and patio
is this something we need to do to move out
we have been good tenants never been late in our rent and hardly called him for fixes in the house about 3 times is what we called him for help.

admin answers:
Your landlord is correct about the move out cleaning list (with the exception of the bulbs) but wrong about charging you for carpet cleaning, that is her responsibility.
Her cleaning list is standard for rentals.
You are right about the carpet cleaning. She can not charge you for normal wear and tear.
