Your Questions About Tub Fixtures Shower

Nancy asks…

Can shower parts (head, faucet, hot & cold handles etc) be easily replaced?

Just bought a house, and all the shower fixtures are very old, the drain handles don’t work, so I want to replace them, but the tubs and shower enclosure are fine. I was under the impression that you can just buy the replacement fixtures, remove the old ones and put in the new, but someone said you have to get behind the shower wall itself, which sounds way too complicated. Any input?

Yes just go to home depot or target, walmart. Ect.

George asks…

How do you know what dimensions you need for a new tub/shower faucet?

I need to replace mine and this is the faucet that originally came with the house (built in 1963). I am interested in replacing with a Moen Chateau. Also would the plumber have to tear out the wall to install the fixtures? There is a little, short door on the other side of the wall located in the bedroom for the tub parts but how do they get to install the shower portion? Before I get an estimate, has anyone ever had this done? Will he have to tear out the bathroom wall and tile to install? Thanks

A plumber would be wise if you have no handy-man skills. I would remove the wall where the faucet goes to make sure the mixing valve and stems have enough clearance to go into the shower. I doubt a new faucet will be a good fit for the old faucet. ( the holes won’t line up.) So, yes he would have to tear it out. Cost would depend on the contractor. Shop around for the best price and remember to check with the BBB.

Lizzie asks…

Tub or Shower, suggestions please!!?

After years of putting it off, it’s time to redo the bathroom. I’m planning new fixtures, toilet, and vanity. Replacing the tile, and adding some heat to the floor.

A friend at work brought up an interesting idea; why not install a shower instead of a tub?

I wasn’t planning on any kind of monster tub, just a generic replacement, so there really aren’t any cost savings. The bathroom is 5×12, so I really couldn’t make a super suite even if I wanted to. But it is the only bathroom in the house.

I’ve never actually taken a bath, only showers. I imagine it would effect resale, but I’ve been here long enough, and plan to stay, that this really isn’t that important.

Do I need to get those glass doors, or can I still use a curtain? What else haven’t I considered?

I suggest a tub(very relaxing) with a shower faucet at the top if you choose to use it
